Movie Review: Waitress

I have seen this comedy/drama written and directed by a young talent Adrienne Shelley  (who also costars) in Waitress eight  times. It is that good.  It is set in the “Deep South” and stars Keri Russell (Felicity) as Jenna, Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Becky and Adrienne Shelley as Dawn.  All three are waitresses at Joe’s  Diner. Old Joe is superbly played by Andy Griffith.

Jenna is in an unhappy marriage to her abusive husband Earl and makes pies as her creative outlet. “Her Falling in Love” pie is my favorite. Jenna meets the new doctor in town and begins to have an illicit affair with him. Becky has a secret she is keeping from the gang and Dawn meets her husband. Dawn (Adrianne Shelley) stands out in this cast and is easily loved. She is quirky and charming in this film.

Unfortunately, as this movie was well received the writer/director 40 year old Shelley was brutally murdered three months before the movie’s release at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007.

Diego Pillco, a nineteen year old construction worker, and an Ecuadorian illegal immigrant plead guilty to her murder in 2008.

Waitress is an outstanding movie and will leave you wanting pie and wanting to say a prayer for Shelley.
